Matt, I just came across your blog via Google seaechrs! Good stuff!I also work at a University and am looking into setting up Vmware View (VDI) for our labs. We are replacing 70 desktops this summer (~$1K each), so my hope was to use that money for backend infrastructure. Have you used VMware View at all? Once catch for us is it's an Ind Tech lab this summer which need to run CAD software, so I'm not sure if it will work well (or at all). I'm currently working with a vendor for NetApp SANS as well. If this all goes well, the next three years budget can also go into infrastructure. Since we are also using VMware Server to virtualize our servers, we could then also use the infrastructure to move to ESX. Any thoughts or suggestions?Keep up the blog! It looks like some good stuff and I will for sure be following now!

VDI-in-a-Box provides antoher alternative in delivering hosted desktops. Most CSPs provide a hosted desktop using XenApp to present a Windows Server session with a Windows 7 look and feel. For customers that are looking for a fully personalised desktop, then VDI-in-a-Box provides a low cost, scalable platform. As Windows 7 VDA is not available under SPLA, the workaround is to provide VDA licenses through OPEN and host these on dedicated servers which coincendentally is the ideal way to build out a VDI-in-a-Box environment. The key to delivering the right desktop to your customer is to explore the options while remaining compliant mix, match & grow.Chris N

Peter,Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I looked into what was going on at the time and never got a decnet answer as to what was going on. I had tried downloading for myself and could not get through. Hopefully my emails stirred some interest in fixing it.Thanks for the compliment. Some days it is hard to come up with something to write about. It is not that there are not lots of things to talk about but rather it seems that it is unclear what value I will add to the topic.Jeff

I agree. A more suitable venue for VMworld Europe would be ttbeer. The Cannes site is just a little too cramped for the amount of people and sessions now offered.I'm not sure it'll be moving anytime soon as I'd heard rumours that VMWare had a 5 year contact/deal on Cannes. The Barcelona venue used for Microsoft's TechNet would be much ttbeer suited as it is massive and can accomodate the sort of numbers now attending VMworld Europe. In any case it's a great event just a shame we have to wait until October.Cheers,Simon

Holy snap!
How many factual errors can you cram in just 13 lines!
The comic strip is called 'Peanuts' not 'Snoopy'.
Currently, a single header file with a total size of 111KB is publicly available, not 300MB of source code.
Having possession of the source code DOESN'T make it easier to find 'weak spots', the easiest way to find bugs is by employing black-box techniques like 'fuzzing'. Having access to the source code will then allow verification of a bug and will greatly enhance exploit development.

I am amazed at the hype on this. All of the Linux source code is published. Arguably this makes it safer not less secure.
